New computer setup checklist
A new computer is easier to live with when the important setup work happens before the old one is wiped, traded in, or put away. Use this checklist to avoid the most common missed steps.
1. Finish operating-system updates first
Connect to a trusted network, install current Windows updates, restart when requested, and check again. New computers can ship with updates waiting even when the device is brand new.
2. Confirm the account you actually want to use
Make sure the primary Windows, Microsoft, email, and cloud-storage accounts are the correct ones before you start moving files. Accidentally creating a second account can make OneDrive, email, subscriptions, and recovery options confusing later.
3. Set up security and recovery
Confirm that built-in security tools are active, enable multi-factor authentication for important accounts, and make sure account recovery information is current. Store recovery codes somewhere safe rather than inside a support request or ordinary email.
4. Decide what should move from the old computer
Photos, documents, desktop files, browser bookmarks, email archives, application data, and specialty folders are easy to overlook. Verify the important files on the new computer before deleting or trading in the old device.
5. Reinstall software from trusted sources
Install the applications you still need from the software vendor, Microsoft Store, or another trusted source. Do not automatically copy every old utility or browser extension just because it was installed on the previous computer.
6. Connect printers, monitors, docks, and accessories
Test the equipment you rely on while the old computer is still available. Printers, scanners, docking stations, specialty USB devices, and older displays sometimes need drivers, adapters, or configuration that is easier to solve before the old setup disappears.
7. Verify backup before retiring the old computer
Make sure important files exist in more than one place. Whether you use OneDrive, another cloud service, or an external drive, verify that the files are actually present and accessible rather than assuming a sync icon means everything is protected.
Before wiping or trading in the old device
Open several transferred files, confirm browser and email access, verify any local-only data you care about, and make sure you know where your backup lives. Once the old drive is erased, recovering something that was missed can become difficult or impossible.
